Land of the Wallabies (August 31)

On our first full day in Granite gorge we had plenty of opportunities to meet with the locals – a large group of Mareeba Rock Wallabies that occupy the nearby gorge and are so used to people that they feed off people’s hands and allow themselves to be petted. A slightly longer walk around the gorge gave us an opportunity to watch some nice birds and release the snake. In the heat of the day we took to the chilly waters of a nearby brook, and at night we did another nocturnal animal search, this time with the kids and with Marcus – a German electronics engineer whose acquaintance we made earlier that day. The yield this time was smaller, but we did manage to photograph one brush-tail possum. When we returned to the caravan, we discovered a small wallaby waiting for us on our picnic table.
