Tortuguero (July 27)

We set out at 5:30 AM for a canoe trip on the rivers and canals of the reserve, wearing a set of dry cloths. They didn’t stay dry for long. Once again, we were treated to pouring rain for most of the trip. Still, we saw quite a few water birds (including an anhinga that had just caught a fish, right at the start of the trip), as well as some iguanas, caimans, and two basilisks—lizards that use their very long toes to run across the surface of the water for 10 meters or more, allowing them to run across streams and escape their enemies. We also saw the silhouette of a spider monkey far up in the high treetops. The nice German family who were with us on the boat trip asked us to exchanges photos from the trip and we readily agreed. Upon returning to the bungalow, we discovered that the previous set of clothes was just as damp as the previous night when we left it out to dry. We added the new set…

Canoeing in Tortuguero

In the afternoon, our German friend told us that he didn’t have any photos to share, because the memory card wasn’t in his camera during the morning trip. His iPhone was not working either, because apparently it got damaged by water. He was hoping to get a new one in the village, where the locals told him there was a cellular shop. While Daniel was taking a nap, the rest of us went to the village, bought some food, and drank some excellent tropical fruit shakes. On our way back, we saw some beautiful butterflies in the garden of the little police station in the village, and lots of large purplish grasshoppers on the grass and bushes near the dock.
