In the early afternoon, we visited the beautiful La Fortuna waterfall, which has about 500 steps leading down to it, and even swam in the river’s water. Before starting the descent, we saw two toucans (of two different species – Keel-billed and Yellow-throated) and a nice Violet-headed hummingbird, but couldn’t get good photos of any of them. The way to the waterfall went through the rainforest, in a steep but very well maintained paved path. A funny sign along the way forbade romantic displays while on the trail… On the way out, a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird gave a long display hovering around the bushes near the entrance.

We had lunch at a nice restaurant overlooking the volcano, where I got a huge sandwich with avocado and smoked salmon. The bread was the best we had so far, so we bought a loaf to take with us.

At night, Tamar and I went on a self-guided night tour. The frog pond we drove to turned out to be located on the grounds of an eco-hotel, and access was only possible with a guide and at an earlier hour. To compensate, on the slow drive back, we found a small yellow frog on the wet road (a passing car prevented me from taking a picture of it, and it escaped to the shoulder) and a tiny, cute snail-eating snake that was properly documented.
