Lyrebirds Galore (August 20)

On Saturday we headed south to the Royal National Park – the World’s second declared National Park, established in 1879! We followed a quiet circular path through the subtropical rainforest, and soon heard the unmistakable sounds of Superb Lyrebirds – the emblem of the NSW National Parks Service and perhaps the world’s best vocal mimic. We soon got a wonderful opportunity to see one up close, and listen to a long and varied concert.

Daniel, who took both pictures and videos of the bird, found out that playing the video inside his fleece pocket immediately caused us to stop and look out for the bird. The trick worked amazingly well, with no significant degradation of the effect even after a dozen trials…

The kids led us several kilometers down the track and back to the car, and we drove to Wattamolla for a view of the small waterfall flowing down the cliff to the seashore and an attempt at whale watching. No whales were spotted, but the kids enjoyed playing on the shore and we enjoyed the calm ocean view.

And here’s our complete Lyrebird soundtrack – especially for Ziv:
